What to look for when purchasing a french fry cutter

Blade sizes

If you’ve ever ordered french fries from more than one place, then you are no doubt aware that there is more than one type of french fry. Sure, the term “french fry” indicates that the potato is cut into long thin strips but there are several ways to go about it.

You’ve got your super skinny McDonald’s fries, all the way up to the thick sweet potato wedges you get from restaurants like Lucky’s.

If you’re looking for a french fry press, you should take the types of french fries you want to make. Luckily, a lot of fry presses on the market today will offer you multiple blade types.

Standard or Heavy Duty

Do you host parties, have a large family, or just like to french cut your vegetables regularly? If so you’ll probably want to get a heavy-duty fry cutter that can withstand the amount of mileage you will put on it.

Conversely, if you seldom consume this delectable side dish, then you should get by just fine with a standard fry press.

Whichever side of the equation you fall under, be sure to take into consideration how much you will be using your new french cutting tool.

What type of potato do you intend to cut

Are you making traditional or sweet potato fries? If you plan on preparing sweet potatoes, you (100%) will need a stronger blade with more leverage to get proper slices; this is because sweet potatoes are harder to cut through than your average russet potato.

Automatic or manual

Most of you reading this shouldn’t even consider getting an electronic or pneumatic french fry cutter (unless you are incredibly lazy), but for those who are going into the restaurant business, you would benefit immensely from getting an automatic machine.

There are fry cutting machines that use air power to force the potato through the blades, making perfect cuts without having to expend even the smallest amount of energy.

Sopito French Fry Cutter and Slicer

Is the Sopito brand the best choice? It’s certainly worthy of this list! It’s commercial-grade model (I’m sensing a theme) that can be easily rinsed out and cleaned. Featuring a stainless steel body and handle, you can rest assured that this is no flimsy device.

This french fry master is rust-resistant and very simple to clean. It boasts a sturdy 1/2 inch french fry blade and an optional 3/8 inch blade which can be purchased separately. The push block serves to get the potato through the blade with little effort.

If you are interested in making sweet potato fries, then this may not be the tool for you. Sure it “can” cut sweet potatoes, but it takes quite a bit of elbow grease to do so, and it isn’t the best for blade longevity.

One major pet-peeve of mine is that this thing doesn’t come with suction cups or any other stabilizing material for that matter. You will absolutely have to have this secured to whatever surface you are using it on. With that in mind. Why on Earth are they not included?

You’ll certainly be making amazing fries if you choose this sleek fry cutter! Those potatoes won’t know what hit ‘em!

The Weston French fry cutter is an economical tool that lets you cut through the thin and thick potatoes easily. It has the knife guide that walks through slicing and dicing the vegetables to the desired size. Also, it has two cutting options with strong blades.

Cleanup is a refreshingly simple. This cutter disassembles for quick & easy cleanup as your fries are in the fryer cooking.

Weston’s quality construction guarantees that this device will be in your kitchen for a long time.

New Star Commercial Grade French Fry Cutter

This cutter is built to last. With a cast iron body and stainless steel rod, this commercial-grade potato slicer slice up fries in no time. The long handle gives you great leverage in slicing sweet potatoes (and other vegetables).

This model has sturdy suction feet, so you can mount it without drilling into your counter. You can even install it on the wall, so the potatoes fall right into your container. The feet easily detach, meaning you can stow this cutter away after you’re done using it.

This cutter’s simple teardown and set up makes cleaning up after slicing easy. With this efficient model, you’ll have more time to spend with your friends, family, and those delicious fries.

The downside to this potato slicer is that it only comes with 1/2″ a half inch blade. If you want different sized cuts, you will have to purchase the blade and the grid for that blade. For the amount of money you pay for this, it would be nice to have multiple blade options.

Here’s another commercial grade model that works great for sweet potato fries! This reliable, all-metal French fry cutter turns out consistently uniform fries, zucchini, and other vegetable sticks with a simple push of the beautifully designed handle.

This cutter includes two different ways to attach it to your counter. There are suction cups for smooth counters. Alternatively, you can mount it on the counter or wall like the other models I’ve mentioned in this post. This one even comes with three different cutting plates to create differently sized fries or veggie sticks. What more could you ask for?

It is flexible, reliable, and rustproof and offers convenience and slicing options. This is mainly because of the different blades sizes. It comes with various wedge blades, and pusher blocks to accommodate different slicing thicknesses. The size of the blade is perfect for both thick and thin fry needs. It is also quite durable. The blades are aluminum alloy with a rod in place to facilitate durability.

Paderno World Cuisine Spiralizer

Paderno World Cuisine 6-Blade Vegetable Slicer / Spiralizer, Counter-Mounted and includes 6 Different Stainless Steel Blades

One of my favorite kitchen tools is the spiralizer. Typically I’ll use it to make zucchini pasta and a myriad of other clean pasta, but it is also great for making some spiral or curly fries, and you’ll be able to pick it up for a much better price tag as well.

This spiralizer has six different blades that will let you cut your potato into chips, and of course, curly fries (it even has a new straight blade feature.

On the downside, this machine is made totally of plastic (aside from the blades), so it won’t be able to handle as much use as a dedicated french fry cutter. Also, there will be an extra step once you’ve sliced your potato into spirals, you’ll have to cut them into shorter lengths.

That said, this spiralizer is likely to get a lot of use in the kitchen, especially if you like to make veggie pasta’s (freaking delicious). Plus it doesn’t hurt that it is super easy to clean.

My favorite french fry cutter

French fry cutters all do about the same thing as the others (save the occasional curly fry cutter). So when deciding which to go with the criteria I took into consideration most was how easy they cut the potatoes, how many size options, and how easy it is to clean.

In the end, the Weston French Fry Cutter rose above the rest because of its all-metal body, with cast iron legs, feet, and handles. The extra large handle gives better leverage when cutting.
