Nerdy Science in the Kitchen

GIR vs OXO: Which Kitchen Tool Brand Is Better?

Published:

Updated:

I don’t remember exactly when OXO became part of my family’s kitchen, I just know it always seemed to be there. It’s a staple in my kitchen memories. The can opener, the grater and mixing tools we used almost every day were OXO, always picked up during a Target run. They weren’t products we researched or debated but I remember them just being available tools that worked. And I use past tense because although I still have many OXO products in my kitchen, I have transitioned now into other brands like GIR.

gir

When I became a chef I started paying much closer attention to the kitchen tools I reached for every day. Cooking professionally made me notice things I never had before like how a spatula felt when mixing a thick dough, how easily it scraped a bowl clean, or how much I appreciated a utensil that didn’t have seams to trap food. I treated myself to a GIR set when I moved into my first apartment a few years ago and since then have gone back for more.

Today, my kitchen has plenty of both brands. I still reach for OXO’s measuring cups, kitchen shears, and prep gadgets almost daily, while GIR has become my favorite for spatulas, spoonulas (especially), ladles, and more recently their silicone baking mat. After years of cooking with both brands, I’ve learned that each has its own strengths, and knowing where each one excels makes it much easier to decide which products deserve a place in your kitchen.

Let’s compare GIR vs OXO and help give you a clearer understanding of what they offer and which fits better into your cooking style and fills your kitchen needs.

Brand Philosophy

oxo

GIR (Get It Right) believes a well-designed kitchen doesn’t need to be filled with gadgets. Its lineup is intentionally streamlined and centers around premium silicone utensils, baking tools, and a handful of carefully chosen accessories that solve everyday cooking problems.

The company began in 2012 and gained popularity for their spatula which is the hero product of their line up. All of their products feel distinct, and the collection is designed to work together as a system which I appreciate and think the minimalist buyer will as well.

OXO has spent more than three decades expanding its lineup into pretty much every corner of the kitchen. Truly it’s impressive how creative some of their products are to fill such specific kitchen roles (more on this below).

OXO began making their products in 1990 and beyond utensils, the company produces peelers, can openers, measuring tools, thermometers, coffee accessories, storage solutions, cleaning products, and countless niche specialty gadgets. If there’s a repetitive kitchen task, odds are OXO has designed a tool specifically for it.

Materials, Construction, and Durability

gir

GIR’s signature utensils are constructed from platinum-cured silicone wrapped around a fiberglass core, creating a seamless, one-piece design with no detachable heads or joints. The silicone is sturdy enough to mix thick cookie dough or mashed potatoes while remaining flexible enough to scrape mixing bowls completely clean.

I cannot stress enough how satisfying it is to use their spoonula (a hybrid baking spatula and spoon head) with the thin edge to scrape a bowl completely spotless and waste no food. Because there are no seams in their construction, food has fewer (or zero) places to collect, cleanup is easier and there are fewer potential “failure points,” aka places where the handle or head could snap or bend, over years of use.

OXO uses a much wider range of materials depending on the product. Throughout the lineup you’ll find silicone, nylon, stainless steel, BPA-free plastics, and the company’s signature Good Grips handles, which are rubber and waterproof handle coatings. Each material is selected based on the tool’s intended purpose rather than following a single construction style. In my personal experience using nylon or plastic just never makes a tool more effective than high quality silicone.

The flexibility of a plastic spatula versus a silicone spatula is extremely obvious when you flip a pancake and the plastic one has absolutely no give or bend. That’s when you start using your hands to help the tool – to help you – to help the food – and it just turns into a big mess.

A Note on Silicone

gir

It’s important to mention silicone individually because silicone utensils are where GIR has earned its reputation, and for good reason. Not all silicone is created equal and when you feel a GIR utensil in your hand the high quality is immediately notable.

Its spatulas, spoonulas, scrapers, cooking spoons, flip spatulas, and baking tools always deliver that same soft, sturdy yet flexible, and luxury handfeel. They’re rigid enough for heavy mixing, flexible enough to scrape every last bit of batter from a bowl, and attractive enough that many home cooks leave them sitting in a countertop utensil crock. Their construction also makes them easy to clean, so you can rinse them and never worry about having a seam to clean out.

OXO also produces excellent silicone utensils that perform reliably in everyday cooking, but they represent just one category within a much broader product lineup. Many of its silicone tools are designed with a sturdy nylon or metal internal core and slightly firmer silicone heads that prioritize control and stability.

That added rigidity can be an advantage when flipping heavier foods like steak, but they don’t bend with bowls, jars, and cookware quite as GIR’s more flexible silicone. If you spend a lot of time scraping batter from mixing bowls, folding delicate ingredients, or getting the last bit of sauce from a pan, you will definitely notice a difference in these two brand’s silicone tools.

Prep Tools and Kitchen Gadgets

oxo

OXO offers one of the largest selections of kitchen gadgets available. Prepare yourself. Vegetable peelers, garlic presses, can openers, salad spinners, kitchen shears, box graters, thermometers, citrus juicers, mandolines, apple corers, cherry pitters, and dozens of other specialty tools are all part of its lineup. Many have become longtime favorites because they’re comfortable to use and engineered specifically for individual kitchen tasks.

My sister gifted my mom a vegetable chopper from OXO a few years ago for Christmas and it was a great idea being we have grown up watching my mom use the garlic chopper from OXO weekly when cooking.

The specific and niche products are sometimes excessive or redundant from the point of view of someone who doesn’t like clutter or gadgets. They definitely do not promote multipurpose tools which is important to note because that is a big deal for many cooks, especially with limited cabinet space.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, GIR keeps its accessory lineup much smaller. They focus on products that complement its core collection of everyday cooking tools.

In addition to its spatulas, spoonulas, turners, whisks, tongs, and baking tools, GIR offers reusable platinum silicone straws. They’re soft on your teeth, work for hot or cold drinks and can be thrown in the dishwasher which is a big plus. They come with a cleaning brush and carrying case, which is nice and practical for home, travel, or everyday use while helping reduce disposable plastic waste. I like this idea as a gift for someone who values recycling and reusable products.

GIR has also recently introduced its Silicone Suction Lid Set, which is made to create an airtight suction seal on bowls, pots, and food storage containers. Which again solves the problems of single use plastic or tin foil, and also saves time trying out ten different tupperware lids to find the right one. That struggle is real.

GIR’s accessory collection reflects the same attention to thoughtful, reusable design found throughout the rest of its lineup, while OXO continues to dominate in overall selection and super specialized products that are unique.

Measuring Tools

oxo

I like this category as an example to show each company’s priorities.

OXO offers one of the strongest and most extensive measuring collections available. Its angled measuring cups, adjustable measuring cups, liquid measuring cups, and measuring spoon sets are popular among home bakers because they’re accurate, durable, and easy to use.

GIR takes a more streamlined approach, very on brand, with its Ultimate Ladle, which features a built-in measuring cup inside the bowl of the ladle. Instead of reaching for a separate measuring cup while cooking soups, sauces, or broths, cooks can measure ingredients directly with the tool already in their hand. A minimalist’s multipurpose dream!

While the Ultimate Ladle won’t replace a dedicated measuring set for someone who bakes frequently, it’s an excellent example of GIR’s emphasis on multifunctional design.

For the bakers… we have to go with OXO here.

Cleaning and Maintenance

gir

Both brands perform well in the dishwasher, but GIR has one decent advantage.

As stated before, many of its utensils are molded in one continuous piece, there are no seams where cookie dough, frosting, oil, or sauces can become trapped. Cleanup is fast, simple, and requires very little extra attention.

OXO’s tools also clean well, although products with hinges, springs, locks, or multiple materials naturally have more areas where food residue can collect and bacteria can grow.

If easy maintenance is high on your priority list, GIR earns the edge. And from experience, my three year old GIR utensil set has been in the dishwasher and hand washed at least three times a week and is still in perfect condition.

Design and Kitchen Aesthetics

gir

I think GIR excels in a lot of ways. The brand has thoughtfully curated its color palette with a little something for everyone. The collection includes muted greens, earthy neutrals, soft blues, a bold primary color set, playful sprinkle patterns, and other modern tones that coordinate across the lineup.

Rather than feeling like a random assortment of utensils accumulated over the years, GIR’s products are designed to work together visually and feel intentional.

That thoughtful design extends beyond color. GIR’s slim, perfectly weighted, streamlined handles feel balanced and comfortable in hand, while the matte silicone finish and seamless one-piece construction create a clean, minimalist look that feels equally at home on the countertop or tucked away in a drawer.

Even the brand’s Mini Tools reflect that attention to detail. Instead of simply shrinking existing utensils as a novelty, GIR created fully functional miniature spatulas, spoonulas, flips, and whisks that are useful for precision cooking tasks (getting the last drop of honey out of a jar) and also happen to be a great fit for smaller hands learning their way around the kitchen, cuteness points!

OXO’s designs are clean and practical, but they prioritize function above visual presentation. The larger ergonomic handles (Good Grips) and mixed-material construction are built for comfort first, and most of the collection feels designed to be stored away after use. The combination of black plastic, stainless steel, silicone, and occasional bright accent colors like orange and red creates a more utilitarian appearance rather than a coordinated design statement.

If your kitchen is an extension of your home’s style, GIR’s cohesive color palette, sleek silhouettes, and thoughtful attention to detail make it one of the most visually appealing utensil collections available.

Price and Availability

GIR vs OXO

While both brands fall into the premium kitchen tool category, OXO generally offers lower entry prices and a wider range of products across multiple price points.

For example, GIR’s popular Ultimate Spatula typically retails for around $13, while its 3-Piece Ultimate Tool Set sells for about $43 and the 5-Piece Ultimate Tool Set costs approximately $70. Larger curated collections, such as the 10-Piece Best Sellers Set, are usually priced around $120. This set is awesome because you get all the silicone spatulas but you get my all time favorite whisk and a super sharp peeler. The pricing reflects GIR’s use of platinum-cured silicone, seamless one-piece construction, and premium industrial design. They definitely feel like professional Chef tools as opposed to amateur cook utensils, and I say that without offense to the home cooks!

OXO’s individual tools are often slightly less expensive. Best-selling products like the Good Grips Swivel Peeler, Balloon Whisk, and Angled Measuring Cups generally retail between $10 and $16, while larger starter collections, such as the 17-Piece Culinary & Utensil Set, can often be found for around $60. If you’re furnishing an entire kitchen from scratch, OXO typically stretches your budget a bit further, and clearly your tool options.

Availability is another advantage for OXO. In addition to its own website, the brand is stocked at retailers including Target, Walmart, Amazon, Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, Crate & Barrel, and many local kitchen stores. OXO products are usually easy to find both online and in person.

GIR has become much more widely available in recent years. Along with its direct-to-consumer website, its products are carried by retailers such as Target, Walmart, Macy’s, Amazon, and a growing number of independent kitchen stores. You may also occasionally find GIR products at stores like HomeGoods or TJ Maxx. Great! Another reason (excuse) for me to go to HomeGoods.

Overall, OXO offers better value for shoppers building a complete kitchen tool collection, but GIR justifies its premium pricing with exceptional silicone quality, seamless construction, colorways, and a design-forward aesthetic that looks at home on the countertop.

Which Brand Should You Buy?

Choose GIR if you:

  • Like displaying utensils on your countertop.
  • Value reusable, multifunctional kitchen accessories.

Choose OXO if you:

  • Want one brand for nearly every kitchen task.
  • Spend a lot of time prepping ingredients.
  • Bake frequently and need dedicated measuring tools.
  • Enjoy specialized novelty gadgets for individual jobs.

OXO Vs. GIR: Final Verdict

GIR

GIR and OXO each excel in different parts of the kitchen, which is why many experienced home cooks end up owning products from both brands, like I do.

GIR stands out for its premium silicone utensils, seamless construction, curated colorways, and thoughtfully designed accessories. It’s an excellent choice for cooks who appreciate high-quality everyday tools that look as good as they perform.

OXO continues to set the standard for kitchen gadgets, ergonomic grip comfort, and overall product selection. If you’re outfitting an entire kitchen or want specialized tools for nearly every task, it’s hard to beat the size of OXO’s catalog.

For many kitchens, the best solution won’t be choosing one brand over the other. GIR’s silicone utensils pair well with OXO’s measuring tools, kitchen shears, can openers, and prep gadgets, giving you the strengths of both brands in one well-equipped kitchen.
