Tacos, burritos, quesadillas, Italian pinwheels, chicken wraps…
These are some of my favorite things to eat that require tortillas. I’ve spent a lot of time and money looking for the best tortillas money can buy. From flour to corn, to whole grain tortillas, heck I’ve even tried tortillas with different vegetable purees infused in them – those are my favorite.
Best of the bunch? I like the wooden pin from Original Kitchen Cooperative at Amazon.
The best tortilla is a homemade tortilla
I swear I have probably tried every form of tortillas, with every combination of ingredients by every brand I can think of. And what I have come to find out, is that the best tortillas are the tortillas that I take the time to craft, prepare and cook by hand.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m saying I love making tortillas (it is admittedly a very tedious process). I’m not even saying that I make especially good tortillas. What I am saying though, is that I get a whole lot more satisfaction in my meals when I take an active, hands-on approach to my meals.

What’s the best tortilla making method?
There are a few different ways you can make tortillas. Some use a tortilla press (I feel like they come out too thin though), others use their hands, while others just take cast iron pans to flatten the dough. The most common way, to my knowledge, is to use a rolling pin for your tortillas.
There are, of course, several options of rolling pins to choose from, all of which are effective. Let’s look at some of the different options and go over their strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully, by the end of the article, you will have an idea of which rolling pin is best for you.
GOBAM Wood Rolling Pin
Here is your average wooden rolling pin. It is 11 inches in length, with a 1.38-inch diameter. This traditional wooden rolling pin is a bit smaller than most, making it the perfect size for rolling tortillas.
Although it is made of natural wood, its burnished surface is smooth, leaving no nooks and crannies to harbor bacteria on the pin. Since it’s smaller in size than other pins, it’s great for children who are learning how to bake and cook. It also fits easily in your drawer or cabinet.
Advantages of a wooden rolling pin
Some of the benefits you get from wooden rolling pins are that they are lightweight, making them easy for anybody to use, regardless of age and size. They are one solid tool so you will never have to worry about bearings going bad, giving them a lot of extra life.
Disadvantages of a wooden rolling pin
The biggest disadvantage of a wooden pin is that dough tends to stick to the wood and the wood absorbs moisture easily. Also, you can’t chill them, so they can’t help keep your dough cool.
Ultra Cuisine Professional French Rolling Pin
This is a stainless steel rolling pin that has quite a bit of weight to it. It is made from a solid block of stainless steel and has a perfectly smooth non-porous finish. This is great for making perfectly flat tortillas.
It is made with matte brush finishing that helps it hold a dust of flour, so your tortillas don’t stick to the surface.
Advantages of using a stainless steel rolling pins
The most obvious advantage of a stainless steel pin is that it doesn’t have any pores in it, so it can’t take on any of the odors from the dough or absorb any moisture. They can be chilled, and they wipe clean easily. Since it’s not wood, you can throw it in the dishwasher to make your cleaning easier.
Also because it doesn’t use bearings you have better control over how much pressure you put on the dough.
Disadvantages of using a stainless steel rolling pin
There are some clear disadvantages of stainless steel rolling pins, one of which being they are much heavier than a wooden rolling pin. You have to be careful to not crush your dough when using it. With this one, in particular, it has a small diameter making it somewhat uncomfortable to handle after a while.
Creative Home 18 inch Marble Stone Rolling Pin
This, like the title says, is a marble rolling pin with wooden handles. It has a 2.25-inch diameter with a 10-inch rolling surface and 4-inch wooden handles on each side. It is crafted by hand from a single block of marble stone, making this a beautiful piece to work with.
It is easy to clean, but because it has wooden handles on it, you should not put it in the dishwasher.
Advantages of a marble rolling pin
Marble rolling pins hold temperatures very well, so they are great for using when you need to keep your dough chilled. Marble isn’t porous, so there is no need to worry about it absorbing smells or moisture, making them much more sanitary than their wooden counterparts.
Maybe the greatest advantage of them is that they are extremely durable and will last a long time.
Disadvantages of using a marble rolling pin
The biggest disadvantage of using marble is that it is very heavy and has a tendency to crush the dough if you are not careful.
Wrap – Up
I will always use store bought tortillas (it’s just too convenient not to), but when I have friends come over for Tacos and Tequila nights I like the process of making the shells myself. To do that, I need a good rolling pin.
